Local information

Lancaster Gate

Lancaster Gate was the name given to the area developing in the last gap along the Uxbridge Road during the nineteenth century and soon became known for housing terraced houses which were 'the most handsome in London.' It is comprised of two long terraces of houses overlooking the park, with a wide gap between them opening into a square which spreads northward to the tower of the former Christ Church. The grand spire of the Christ Church still remains and was built in 1855 to the plans of F H Francis. The terraces are stuccoed and are in an eclectic classical style featuring English Baroque details and French touches.

Rebuilding was more prominent to the west of Lancaster Gate than it was to the east. Nineteenth century buildings, mainly offices, can be found to the west with stucco houses and mews to the east. The layout and the size of houses have caused Lancaster Gate to be described as Bayswater's most ambitious and successful architectural achievement. Along the Bayswater Road frontage stretch two beautiful colonnades with splendidly elaborate white terraces designed by Sancton Wood leading off in all directions.
Lancaster Gate is a charming and stunning part of the city which explains why it has attracted a variety of residents from Lytton Strachey, the biographer, to the Emperor Haile Selassie

Furthermore, transport routes are never too far in this part of London so that mobility and accessibility are never a problem. Whatever your location within W2, you are never more than 5 minutes walk from a bus or train station. Seven tube stations are especially prominent within the area; Lancaster Gate, Hyde Park Corner, Marble Arch, Paddington, Bayswater, Queensway and Royal Oak. There are also numerous bus stations dispersed within the area so travelling to other parts of Central London is not difficult.
