Bayswater is located in the postal district of W2 in west London, in the boroughs of Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea. Initially a hamlet, Bayswater was a remote and rural area bordering the north of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. With the opening of Bayswater Underground station and Paddington’s first public baths and the development of hotels and apartments, Bayswater slowly began to urbanise. Today, Bayswater is one of London’s most cosmopolitan areas and is now a heavy residential area and affluent suburb.
During the Victorian and Edwardian eras, Bayswater bloomed – this can be seen with the remarkable architectural buildings in this town. Bayswater is studded with gorgeous Victorian stucco terraced houses, which are now subdivided into flats and boarding houses. These properties range from small studio flats to expensive apartments. Although Bayswater is known as Victorian London, much of its architecture was built in a Georgian style. These were based on houses that were built during the Georgian era and feature lovely landscaped gardens and massive floor plans, giving home buyers excellent value for money.
There are several attractions in and around Bayswater; these include the beautiful Greek Orthodox Cathedral – Saint Sophia Cathedral which was designed by John Oldrid Scott in 1879, the gorgeous gardens of Cleveland Square which is an area of approximately 1.5 acres of lawn, paths and flowerbeds and Porchester Square Gardens, which is one of the last areas of Bayswater to be built. In addition, Bayswater boasts London’s first department store – Whiteleys, which has a wonderful array of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes to keep you entertained. Bayswater enjoys an incredible choice of restaurants – the main streets of Queensway and Westbourne Grove are famous for having many ethnic-cuisine restaurants. With several tube stations located nearby such as Bayswater, Queensway, Royal Oak and Lancaster Gate, and regular buses and numerous bus stations within the area, access to the rest of London is very convenient.
